Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing clearly illustrates places, people, and the setting in such detail that the reader can actually live the writer’s experience.

Special moments in life such as births, weddings, graduations, and vacations can provide optimal opportunities for writing expressively.

Using all your senses as you explain in great detail, what is taking place, will bring your readers right into the action, and as you capture their attention, they take the ride right along with you, which is exactly what you want as a writer!

Think about it, what are your favorite books? Were you swept up in the story? Could you see it all unfolding in your imagination? Did the story stay with you even after you read the last page?

This is why it's so important to get it right and spend the time it takes to create a great story, characters and use language to make it all come to life.

What are your writing goals?

Characteristics of writing expressively are:

  • Showing, rather than telling through the use of active verbs and defined modifiers.

  • Use of detailed language and sensory images.

  • Using figurative language like symbolism, personification, simile, and metaphors.

  • Details that are vibrant, rich, and lively in their description.

When do you use description in your writing?

If you write fiction, description appears almost everywhere such as introduction of the characters and setting. But is often included in other genres including writing children's books and many other freelance writing opportunities. So, if writing careers appeal to you, it's best to learn this valuable skill.

But how do you learn how to write to bring your readers along for the ride? In order to have your sentences flow naturally you need to practice!

Here are some creative writing tips for you to follow that have always helped me with my descriptive writing. I recommend that you give them a try!

  • Pay attention to the details of what is happening around you. Think about what you see and hear.

  • Carry a small notebook with you at all times. Write down details of what you are observing.

  • Sit down and write something everyday. Even if you just write a sentence, it gets your thoughts moving and helps to create a habit you will benefit from.

  • Become more observant in your everyday life. Take time to write things down using description and then re-read it later to see if you left out important details.

  • Pay attention to "who," "what," "when," "where," "how," and "why" as you observe.

  • Good descriptive writing depends heavily on the details and recollecting vivid moments. As you observe an event, write down everything that you observed. Push yourself to remember as many details as you can. It may help to close your eyes and bring yourself back to that earlier time.

  • Write exactly what you see, feel, hear, taste, and smell. Be specific when you take notes. Focus on the details.

  • Write like you talk. Keep it simple and clear. Say what you mean.

  • Read books that teach writing descriptively.

  • Work on your narrative writing and writing prompts. The more you do it the better you get.

    Creative writing prompts

  • Observe, and then describe an event.

  • Think of a special person or event that stands out in your memory. Write a detailed description of that subject.
  • Pay attention to details as you read. Think about how the author brings you in to that world.

  • Write an e book about something you know.
