Creative Writing Ideas
& Tips for Writers

"These creative writing ideas & tips will make you a much better     writer and author!"

Creative and imaginative writing ... exactly what is it?

Creative writing is developing imaginative drama, fiction, or poetry. The big concern that I hear most often is, how can I discover how to get better?

My response is to just keep practicing! It's not complicated, but many writers’ make it that way.

I understand it's not all that easy to actually do it. The reality is that Writing comes really easily to some, and not for others.

It can be extremely discouraging for those who need to work so hard at writing and despite their best efforts, still don't believe they have actually written very well. The thing is that if you feel it in your heart, you can do it. Just know that it may take more work to get to where you'd like to be.

You see, writing can be a difficult process and although there are strategies that can be learned to develop your talents, writing creatively is a gift and like any gift, not everybody possess it.

It's helpful to take creative writing classes, utilizing writing prompts and being focused are things that can help you to improve.

Putting words on paper isn't that difficult, but in order to be successful you need to do it better than most. Take singing as an example, most of us can carry a tune and some of us can sing pretty well but if you compare someone to, let's say Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, you may realize that more singing lessons would do you well.

Here are a couple of creative writing ideas to help you to get your imagination flowing and put your energies in the right direction.

Creative Writing Tips

  • First, to be a great writer and author you should love to read and invest some of your time reading, observing, listening, and taking in your surroundings. Write about exactly what you see, hear, and smell. Stay in the present and pay attention.

  • Most writers have excellent imaginations and love stories and it doesn't matter what type of story it is, whether they are fairy tales, mysteries, or romance. Telling a story is exactly what the imaginative writer and author does, so you need to learn to become a storyteller.
  • Writers are at their best and do work to be proud of when they use creative writing ideas and concepts that originate from their own interests. So writing what you know is a great place to start.
  • Select topics that you know well and have a passion for and share that passion in your writing.
  • Use creative writing prompts to extend yourself and practice new skills. Anytime you challenge yourself, you're growing and getting better.
  • Readers of fiction really want to believe the story they are reading. Having an intimate knowledge of your characters is the best way to write an imaginable plot.
  • Characters drive the plot. Write great characters and you will have a much better chance of having a great story.
  •  Include the significant components of a story.

They include:

1) Plot is the events that take place in the story.

2) Characters are the people or animals who will be in the story.

3) Setting is the physical time and location where the story takes place.

4) Dialogue is the spoken words of the characters in the story.

5) Point of view is the identification of the narrator with the characters.

6) Theme is the main idea or meaning behind a story.

7) Style is the author's use of the language.

  • Discover your own voice. This is the one writing tip most ignored by new writers.
  • Editing is crucial so just do it!
  • Details in the story make it so much more intriguing.
  • A compelling first sentence and an interesting first chapter so your reader is sucked in quickly. Concentrate on your descriptive writing.
  • Be sure to take in-depth notes of your characters, plot and setting so your story progresses.
  • Tie up all loose ends by the time your story ends.

  • Write what you like to read.
  • Don't tell exactly what happened; recreate what occurred as its taking place.
  • Allow someone you trust read your work. Ask for honest feedback.
  • Writer's should help each other out. Learn from those that are more advanced and teach beginners.

It can be tough to get published traditionally, but if you believe in your work, and want to consider publishing it yourself, take a look at Writing ebooks for fun & Profit.  It's a step by step guide on how to write and publish your own e-book.

I like it because it puts you in the drivers seat and run the whole show. And e-books have become very popular!

I also really like Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual: How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book (Volume 2) and The Well-Fed Self-Publisher by Peter Bowerman.

These are my top two books on self-publishing. I use them both and highly recommend them.

Whatever rules or creative writing tips you read about writing, you will always be able to find some published work that violates them.

I believe writers are life long learners. Read books and magazines like Writer's Digest and The Writer Write what you enjoy and the most important of all the freelance writing tips you've read here...enjoy the process of writing.

That is what it is all about!

"A cardinal rule of writing to follow is, never write your own back cover copy. Why? You’re too close to the work and can’t be objective. Enter Maria Pease.

I contracted her services to write the back cover copy for my upcoming novel, Crossing Lives. The only caveat was, my manuscript was nowhere near finished.  Despite this obstacle, Maria took on the project.

Most copywriters won’t touch this type of project unless you can furnish them with a copy of the entire work to be summarized.

In a span of three weeks, with just a few chapters and handful of character sketches to go by, she was able to craft a masterful blurb that captured the essence of the story I’m trying to tell.

Maria communicated with me on consistent basis and took a personal interest in my project. This was a pleasant surprise. Most “work for hire” is cold, aloof, and distant.

I highly recommend Maria Pease for all your copywriting needs."
